A sensitivity reader is hired to review a manuscript to ensure a particular identity or particular trauma is being represented fairly on the page. They highlight stereotypes, inaccuracies, and insulting language– and then offer suggestions on how to shift from there. Sensitivity readers do not shield your work from criticism. This is because the conversations that happen between readers and the authors is often confidential, because you are not obligated to adjust your writing to notes, and because no identity is a monolith. What sensitivity readers do offer is a way to speak from an experience that is not your own and know that you have done what you can to amplify, not further oppress, the voices of the marginalized.
